Neighbor Indicted in Murder of “King of the Hill” Star Jonathan Joss

Jonathan Joss, the beloved voice actor best known for portraying John Redcorn on the iconic animated series King of the Hill, was fatally shot at his home in San Antonio, Texas. On Monday, November 17, 2025, a grand jury indicted his neighbor, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 57, on a murder charge in connection with the shooting.

Alvarez had previously been arrested in June on first-degree murder charges and posted $200,000 bond before being released, according to local outlet KTBC and Bexar County court records.

Details of the Shooting

Joss, 59, whose legal name was Jonathan Joss Gonzales, was found deceased near the roadway outside his home on June 1, after a shooting that police say followed ongoing disputes with his neighbor, Alvarez.

Joss’ husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, told authorities that he witnessed the shooting and alleged that the incident was connected to years of harassment stemming from Joss’ sexuality. Tristan recounted prior threats on Joss’ life, including arson targeting their former home, and described the harassment as openly homophobic.

Alvarez reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle but later confessed to the shooting immediately upon being detained by authorities. Police reports indicate Alvarez “intentionally and knowingly discharged a weapon” at Joss, with the weapon identified as a rifle.

A witness also told police she observed an argument between Joss and Alvarez shortly before the fatal shooting.

Legal Proceedings

Alvarez’s attorney claimed that his client acted in self-defense, stating in June, “People in Texas have a right not to be a victim. You have a right to self-defense and a right to the defense of third persons legally and under the law, and we believe that applies here.”

While Joss’ husband suggested the attack was motivated by Joss’ sexuality, a San Antonio Police Department spokesperson indicated that their investigation found no evidence to classify the death as a hate crime.

Jonathan Joss’ Life and Career

Jonathan Joss, of Native American descent, was celebrated for his performances on television and film. In addition to his role on King of the Hill, he appeared as Chief Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation, and had roles in series such as Tulsa King, Ray Donovan, and True Grit, as well as the film The Magnificent Seven.

Joss was also preparing to return for the upcoming King of the Hill revival when he interrupted a panel at the ATX TV Festival earlier in June 2025 to discuss his experience with discrimination. Reflecting on a recent fire at his home, he revealed, “My house burned down three months ago because I’m gay.”

Community Reaction

The news of Joss’ death and the indictment of his neighbor has resonated deeply with fans, colleagues, and the entertainment community, highlighting ongoing conversations around safety, discrimination, and justice for LGBTQ individuals.

An attorney for Alvarez has not yet provided additional comment following the indictment.
