Germany moved to the top of Group A in 2026 World Cup qualifying with a comfortable victory over Luxembourg, thanks to a double from Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade.
After a frustrating first half in which the German side struggled to break down a resilient Luxembourg defense, the floodgates opened shortly after halftime. Woltemade capitalized on a precise Leroy Sané cross, slotting home the opener just four minutes after the break.
Woltemade’s Second Seals the Victory
The 23-year-old striker doubled Germany’s lead in the final 20 minutes, finishing a well-timed Ridle Baku pass to secure the win. Late in the match, Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz saw a shot blocked as Germany searched for a third goal, but Woltemade’s brace was enough to maintain the German side’s lead atop the group.
The result leaves Germany ahead of Slovakia on goal difference, with both teams already assured of a top-two finish. The automatic qualification spot remains undecided, setting up a decisive clash between Germany and Slovakia in their final qualifying fixture on Monday, 17 November, in Germany.
Woltemade’s Rising Form
Woltemade’s performance continues his excellent form in England after scoring six goals in his debut season at Newcastle, highlighting his growing importance for both club and country.
“Nick is showing what he can do at the international level, building on his strong season with Newcastle,” one German analyst commented.
With Germany aiming for direct qualification, Woltemade’s contribution could prove crucial in the final game against Slovakia, where both sides will battle for the top spot in Group A.
