The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the UK Department for Business and Trade have begun sensitizing Nigerian exporters on opportunities in the UK market through the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS).
The DCTS, which replaced the UK’s Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) in June 2023, provides duty-free and quota-free access to thousands of products from eligible countries. Nigerian exporters stand to benefit in sectors like agriculture, textiles, leather, processed foods, and manufactured goods.
Officials emphasized the need for exporters to understand rules of origin, documentation, product standards, and trade facilitation measures under the scheme. The UK is also assisting Nigerian agencies such as NAFDAC to certify exporters and ensure their products meet international standards, creating a supportive trade ecosystem for practical use of the DCTS.
