Nigerian Army Arrests Two Herders for Trespassing, Damaging Crops on Benue Farmland

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested two herders for trespassing and destroying crops on a community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday evening by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, of the Headquarters of the Joint Taskforce, the incident occurred on November 20, 2025, during a routine farm protection patrol by troops deployed at Zongo Akiki. The herders reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands, causing damage to crops.

The statement partly read:

“In a sustained effort to protect farmers and guarantee food security during the peak of the harvest season, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested two herders who were found trespassing and destroying crops on a community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State. The swift intervention prevented further destruction and possible confrontation between the herders and the affected farmers. The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action.”

Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“Violence or reprisal attacks only worsen tensions and jeopardise peaceful co-existence,” he said, stressing that herders should be law-abiding.

Operation Whirl Stroke reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding farmlands and promoting a conducive environment for legitimate enterprises.
