Nigerian Government Confirms Only One Official Version of Tax Reform Laws

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that there is only one official version of the newly enacted tax reform laws.

Speaking at an end-of-year press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, dismissed claims suggesting that the laws were altered after passage by the National Assembly. He stressed that the version assented to by President Bola Tinubu remains unchanged.

Idris explained that the laws followed the proper legislative process, including thorough consultations and debates at the National Assembly, before receiving presidential approval. “The Federal Government is proceeding with implementation, noting no changes,” he said.

Addressing concerns about potential differences between the version passed by lawmakers and the one officially gazetted, the minister emphasized that it is ultimately the National Assembly’s responsibility to review any discrepancies. “As far as the government of Nigeria is concerned, there is only one version of that tax document,” he added.

The issue arose after Abdussamad Dasuki, a lawmaker representing Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in Sokoto State, raised concerns in the House of Representatives, claiming that the version passed by the legislature differed from the one later gazetted and distributed by the Federal Government.
