Nigerian Law School Student Reportedly Dies by Suicide After Being Barred from Final Exam

A student of the Nigerian Law School, Yola Campus, Ayomiposi Ojajuni, reportedly died by suicide after being barred from sitting the Call to Bar Final Examination due to failure to meet the mandatory 75% attendance requirement, campus sources told SaharaReporters on Sunday.

A reliable source at the Yola Campus revealed that Ojajuni, along with three other students, was excluded from the Bar exams over various infractions. While Ojajuni was barred for insufficient attendance, another student from Bauchi State was disqualified following a petition reportedly filed against him.

Typically, the Nigerian Law School releases the list of eligible candidates two weeks before examinations, allowing students with legitimate medical or attendance issues time to regularize their records. However, the school has recently adopted a last-minute release of the eligibility list, leaving students with little opportunity to address concerns.

Ojajuni, a graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, reportedly became visibly distressed on Saturday morning, December 6, after learning he would not be allowed to take the professional examination, which had commenced that day.

He was later said to have ingested a harmful substance and was rushed to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, where he tragically passed away on Sunday.

This incident has raised concerns about the timing and communication of eligibility notices at the Nigerian Law School, as well as the emotional toll of academic disqualifications on students.
