The Delta State Police Command has arrested 13 suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity, also known as Black Axe, during a late-night operation in Ekraka Community Forest, Kokori, Ethiope East Local Government Area.
The arrests followed actionable intelligence received on December 20, 2025, indicating that the cult group was planning an initiation ceremony deep inside the forest. The Quick Response Squad (QRS), led by SP Collins Achem, swiftly mobilised to prevent the gathering.
At approximately 11:00 PM, the police stormed the forest location. Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects allegedly engaged them in a gunfight, which was met with a measured police response. While 13 suspects were arrested, several others managed to escape further into the forest.
A search of the area yielded multiple weapons and items linked to cult activities, including:
- Two automatic pump-action guns
- One double-barrel cut-to-size gun
- One single-barrel cut-to-size gun
- A battle axe
- Aprons with the inscription “NBM”
- Razor blades cut into pieces
- Mobile phones, charms, and suspected hard drugs
In addition, seven vehicles believed to belong to the cult members were recovered and towed to the QRS Base in Warri.
The arrested suspects are currently in custody undergoing interrogation, while investigations continue to dismantle the broader cult network and apprehend those who escaped.
SP Bright Edafe, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism and violent crime. He also urged parents, schools, community leaders, faith-based organisations, and youths to actively support efforts to combat cult activities through guidance, mentorship, and timely reporting of suspicious behaviour.
Residents were encouraged to remain vigilant and provide credible information to enhance public safety across the state.
