Nigerian Police Detain Activists Over Alleged Stampede at APC Aspirant’s Home

Concerns are growing over the detention of civic activists in Osun State following their reports of an alleged stampede that killed three people during a food distribution at the Ikire residence of an APC governorship aspirant.

A family source described the arrests as a clampdown on civic reporting and a violation of due process. One source said, “A friend of mine is in detention for trying to expose alleged deaths at a politician’s compound during a food distribution event.”

The activists include Mr. Abiodun Adegoke and Mr. Iyiola Monsuru, members of the civic group Concerned Citizens of Nigeria (CCN). Adegoke was reportedly arrested in Osogbo over an alleged defamation complaint after reporting the December 27, 2025 incident in Ikire. Sources allege he was detained without prior engagement, denied bail, and may be transferred to Abuja without a court order.

The stampede allegedly occurred during the early hours of December 27, as food items and cash gifts were being distributed. Victims included Mrs. Buli Balogun (Iya Eleelo) and two others.

CCN condemned the arrests, calling them an attack on freedom of expression. In a statement, the group urged the police to focus on a transparent investigation into the deaths instead of detaining activists reporting on the tragedy.

The group highlighted that accountability and justice should be prioritized, citing a previous case in Ibadan where authorities ensured justice was pursued despite the social status of those involved. CCN demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Monsuru and stressed their readiness to cooperate with security agencies for a fair and thorough investigation.

Adegoke had written on social media that the incident involved Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, described as the APC’s governorship aspirant, and called on authorities and citizens to ensure justice for the deceased.
