Nigerians Alarmed Over Alleged Alteration of New Tax Laws; Lawmaker, Dasuki, Calls It ‘Impeachable Offense’

The House of Representatives member, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, has sparked public outcry by alleging that the newly passed tax laws were altered before being gazetted for public implementation.

In a video that went viral on X, Dasuki claimed that the versions of the tax laws made available to Nigerians differ from those passed by the National Assembly. He emphasized that the discrepancies are not mere clerical errors but constitute a violation of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Mister Speaker, honorable colleagues, what was passed on this floor is not what is gazetted. I gave my vote, and it was counted, and I’m seeing something completely different. This is a breach of the Constitution and our laws,” Dasuki said.

House Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas assured lawmakers that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

The allegations have provoked strong reactions online. Some Nigerians suggested that if verified, the alterations could amount to an impeachable offense.

On X, a user, OurFaveOnlineDoc, commented, “The presidency just played the National Assembly as fools. This is a total new low for this country.” Human rights activist and lawyer Inibehe Effiong echoed the sentiment, stating, “This is an impeachable offense.” Similarly, Obiasogu David said, “If this is true, then the government has committed a constitutional fraud.”

As of now, the presidency has not responded to the allegations. The new tax law, signed by President Bola Ahmed in June, is set to take effect on January 1, 2025.
