Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters Orders Immediate Removal of Non-Essential Roadblocks Nationwide

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has ordered the immediate dismantling of non-essential static roadblocks and unauthorized checkpoints across key national highways, citing operational inefficiency and risks to both civilians and security personnel.

The directive, issued through an internal communication dated December 5 and signed by Brigadier General A. Rabiu “for CDS”, warned that the “Headquarters has observed a growing proliferation of non-essential static roadblocks and checkpoints along several routes within the JOA.”

While road security operations remain crucial, the memorandum highlighted that the increasing number of unapproved checkpoints has begun to undermine operational efficiency, disrupt freedom of movement, and expose troops to unnecessary risks. The directive specifically mentioned major highways including:

  • Abuja–Lokoja–Ajaokuta–Idah–Otukpa–Obollo Afor–Enugu
  • Abuja–Lokoja–Obajana–Kabba–Omuo–Ekiti–Ikole Ekiti
  • Abuja–Lokoja–Okene–Okpella–Auchi–Benin
  • Abuja–Kaduna–Kano
  • Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba–Niger Bridge

The DHQ instructed all Theatre Commanders (TCS) and Force Commanders (FCs) to dismantle non-essential checkpoints immediately and ensure that only approved locations remain operational.

The directive further emphasized the need to replace unnecessary static posts with enhanced mobile patrols and intelligence-driven operations, urging commanders to rely on aggressive mobile monitoring and human intelligence to secure routes effectively.

This decision comes amid rising concerns over insecurity across Nigeria, reflecting a shift toward more strategic, mobility-focused approaches to road security.
