Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer Warns Conviction May Influence 2027 Elections

Aloy Ejimakor, legal consultant to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has warned that public dissatisfaction over Kanu’s conviction could significantly impact voting patterns in the 2027 general elections if not addressed.

Speaking on Sunday, Ejimakor said his position stems from travels across the South-East during the Christmas and New Year holidays, where he observed widespread unhappiness among the Igbo populace regarding Kanu’s sentencing.

He stated:
“Residents are very unhappy about the conviction of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and if it’s not rectified urgently, they will surely make their feelings known in the 2027 elections.”

Ejimakor also raised concerns about Kanu’s transfer to a correctional facility in Sokoto, far from Abuja, arguing it hinders his constitutional right under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution to pursue appeals and fair legal representation. He noted that Kanu currently represents himself, following the withdrawal of his full legal team after retaining Ejimakor only as a consultant.

“Kanu’s constitutional right is at risk. The appeal process requires immediate and detailed actions, which are impossible without close access to the courts and legal support,” Ejimakor said.

Kanu was convicted on seven terrorism-related counts on November 20, 2025, by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja after years of trial disruptions and legal disputes. His lawyer emphasized that the post-judgment regime and continued legal advocacy are crucial, and the South-East’s response to the conviction remains a pressing political issue.
