No Issue with Judges Attending Political or Social Events – Senior Lawyer Ubani

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer Monday Ubani has stated that there is nothing wrong with judges attending parties or events organised by politicians, emphasizing that socialising does not automatically compromise judicial integrity.

Ubani acknowledged that judges are human and should be allowed to interact socially, but stressed the importance of maintaining professional boundaries.

He said:

“The question on judges attending parties, which some consider very bad, I do not share that view. Going to a party does not make a judge bad or mean they will compromise their duties. Are we saying judges are no longer human because of their position?”

Ubani added that attending events should not influence judicial decisions:

“A judge can be your friend, know you personally, yet still deliver fair judgments. I know judges who have ruled against me and others who will reject bribes outright. There are a few bad actors, but the focus should be on removing them, not demonizing all judges for socialising.”

He concluded by urging a distinction between social interaction and professional conduct, highlighting that most judges remain fair and impartial regardless of their social engagements.
