Nobel Peace Laureate Narges Mohammadi Arrested in Iran, Supporters Say

Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has reportedly been arrested while attending a memorial ceremony in Mashhad, a northeastern city in Iran, according to her supporters.

The Narges Foundation stated that Mohammadi, 53, was detained during an event honoring Khosrow Alikordi, a 46-year-old lawyer and human rights advocate who recently died under unclear circumstances. Local officials claimed Alikordi suffered a heart attack, but over 80 Iranian lawyers have signed a statement requesting further investigation.

Authorities in Iran have not confirmed Mohammadi’s detention, and it is unclear whether she will be returned to prison to serve a prior sentence.

Supporters Condemn Arrest

Supporters described Mohammadi as being “violently detained” by security and police forces. Several other activists present at the memorial were also reportedly taken into custody. The Narges Foundation called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees, labeling the arrests as serious violations of fundamental freedoms.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee condemned the arrest, calling it “brutal” and urging Iranian authorities to immediately clarify her whereabouts, ensure her safety, and release her without conditions.

Health Concerns

Mohammadi, an engineer by training, has a history of serious health issues. She was granted temporary medical leave from prison in December 2024 to address long-standing cardiac and bone problems. Doctors had advised she remain on medical leave for at least six more months, warning that a return to prison could severely worsen her health.

Activism and Previous Imprisonments

Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times and convicted on five occasions, with cumulative sentences exceeding 30 years. Her most recent imprisonment began in 2021 after attending a memorial for a protester killed during nationwide demonstrations. She has been a prominent voice against Iran’s restrictions on civil liberties, especially regarding women’s rights and political dissent.

Footage circulating online reportedly shows Mohammadi addressing the crowd without a headscarf and leading chants referencing Majidreza Rahnavard, who was executed publicly in 2022, highlighting her continued activism despite ongoing threats.

Context

The arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on civil society figures in Iran as the country faces economic pressure, sanctions, and heightened regional tensions. Human rights organizations and activists have repeatedly called for international attention to Mohammadi’s repeated detentions and her deteriorating health condition.
