NSE Urges Ogun State to Embrace Renewable Energy to Cut Carbon Emissions

The Abeokuta branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has called on the Ogun State government to adopt renewable energy solutions as a means to support businesses, reduce carbon emissions, and boost economic growth.

NSE Chairman Olumayowa Idowu made the recommendation on Tuesday, emphasizing that renewable energy can help lower emissions and local pollution while promoting productive activities and strengthening the local economy.

Idowu highlighted that Ogun State, with its industrial clusters and residential estates, has the potential to become a leader in solar energy adoption.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Society’s secretariat 6,000W solar-powered inverter system and an 18-seater Ford Transit bus, he noted that similar initiatives in major offices across the state could reduce reliance on diesel generators, especially in areas prone to frequent power outages.

“Nigeria is entering a new phase where renewable energy is no longer optional—it is essential. Ogun State has the potential to lead in solar adoption. Scaling renewable solutions will improve reliability, support businesses, reduce carbon emissions, and drive economic growth,” Idowu said.

He added that renewable energy could also help households and companies cut operating costs, resulting in long-term savings on fuel consumption and electricity tariffs.

The NSE chairman further stressed the Society’s commitment to supporting government infrastructure projects, promoting innovation and digital transformation, and nurturing the next generation of competent young engineers.

He urged colleagues to continue innovating, collaborating, and adopting sustainable practices that can positively transform society.
