Abuja, Nigeria – Osita Okechukwu, a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on Nigerians to follow the advice of the party’s National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, by demanding accountability from their state governors.
Okechukwu emphasized that governors are among the biggest beneficiaries of the removal of fuel subsidy, yet many citizens continue to struggle with multidimensional poverty and local insecurity.
In a statement on Tuesday, he lamented that despite significant increases in allocations from the Federal Allocation Accounts Committee (FAAC), Nigerians are still experiencing infrastructure deficits.
He highlighted historical fuel subsidy expenditures as reported by NEITI and the IMF, noting:
- 2010 – N667 billion
- 2011 – N2.11 trillion
- 2012 – N1.36 trillion
- 2013 – N1.32 trillion
- 2014 – N1.22 trillion
- 2015 – N654 billion
- 2016 – N240 billion
- 2017 – N154 billion
- 2018 – N1.9 trillion
- 2019 – N508 billion
- 2020 – N864 billion
- 2021 – N1.43 trillion
- 2022 – N4.39 trillion
- 2023 – N3.6 trillion
Okechukwu urged a shift in mindset, stressing that citizens should not place the blame solely on the Federal Government or the President, as revenue distribution extends to state and local governments.
He also praised President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to national renewal through reforms in energy and substantial security funding.
“Professor Yilwatda’s appeal is a reminder that accountability must cascade downwards. My candid appeal is for APC governors, in particular, to rededicate themselves to development, especially now that the majority are outstanding,” Okechukwu said.
