Former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has donated reusable sanitary pads valued at over N5 million to adolescent girls across Nigeria’s Northcentral region.
Speaking during the presentation in Abuja, Olawepo-Hashim said the initiative aims to support girls affected by economic hardship, ensuring their dignity and well-being are preserved. The first phase of the program will benefit over 2,000 girls, with plans to expand distribution in subsequent phases.
The program, coordinated by Mrs. Judith Fidelis, former Commissioner of Girl Guides in Plateau State, addresses the challenge of many young girls being unable to afford disposable sanitary pads due to rising costs.
“His Excellency was moved to act because of the current economic realities. Many young girls cannot afford disposable pads, so this initiative was born out of concern for their dignity and well-being,” Mrs. Fidelis said.
The reusable pads, branded ‘Nature Drip’, are eco-friendly and made from locally sourced materials. They are designed to be washed, dried, and reused comfortably, offering a sustainable alternative to disposable pads, which can take hundreds of years to decompose.
Mrs. Fidelis highlighted the safety and durability of the product, noting that it is registered and certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), subjected to laboratory testing, and sterilized before packaging.
“With just two or three of these pads, a girl can manage comfortably for a year if properly maintained. It is economical, sustainable, and promotes menstrual hygiene,” she said.
The coordinator praised Olawepo-Hashim for his dedication to empowering girls and women, describing him as “a leader who genuinely cares about the girl child, not just a politician seeking votes.”
This initiative represents a significant step towards improving menstrual hygiene, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting vulnerable girls in Nigeria.
