Ukrainian boxing legend Oleksandr Usyk has confirmed plans for a 2026 return to the ring, despite earlier suggestions that his career could be nearing its end. The 38-year-old two-time undisputed world champion revealed that he intends to fight until he’s 41 but has ruled out facing rising British star Moses Itauma, calling the 20-year-old “too young.”
Usyk, who captured the undisputed heavyweight title after stopping Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in July 2025, remains unbeaten in 24 professional fights and is widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world. His decision to extend his career has reignited interest in the future of the heavyweight division.
Usyk: “I’ll Fight Until I’m 41”
Speaking to the Ready to Fight website, Usyk revealed his plans to continue boxing for at least two more years before transitioning into coaching and youth development.
“I’ll fight until I’m 41,” Usyk said. “Then I’ll build a sports academy – I’ll train there and train others.”
The Ukrainian icon also confirmed he has resumed light training after recovering from a back injury that forced him to postpone his planned bout with WBO mandatory challenger Joseph Parker earlier this year.
“God willing, I’ll be back next year,” Usyk added. “I can’t say who exactly I’ll fight next because negotiations are ongoing. I’d be lying if I gave you a name.”
No Fight With Moses Itauma: “He’s Young – Always Teasing Me”
Usyk also addressed growing speculation about a potential fight with rising British heavyweight Moses Itauma, but firmly dismissed the idea.
“No, I won’t fight Itauma,” said Usyk. “He’s young – always teasing me. And he said himself he doesn’t hit grandpas.”
The comments were made in jest, but they signal that Usyk is focused on more experienced opponents for his next bouts rather than prospects still on the rise.
Moses Itauma’s Rapid Rise
Moses Itauma, the 20-year-old heavyweight sensation from Chatham, has been making headlines with his explosive performances. He extended his unbeaten record to 13-0 (11 KOs) in August after a stunning two-minute stoppage of former world title challenger Dillian Whyte.
The WBA has since ordered its “regular” champion Kubrat Pulev to face Itauma next, though the Bulgarian is reportedly pushing for a title defense against Murat Gassiev in Dubai this December.
Promoter Frank Warren has insisted that Pulev “has to face Itauma,” which could set up one of the most intriguing heavyweight clashes outside the major titles later this year.
What’s Next for Usyk?
While Usyk’s immediate opponent remains uncertain, he is expected to defend his WBO, WBA, IBF, and IBO titles upon returning in 2026. Talks with Joseph Parker are ongoing, and the bout could be rescheduled for early next year if both sides reach an agreement.
Usyk, who previously achieved undisputed status at cruiserweight before conquering the heavyweight division, has hinted that his next fights will be “legacy bouts” — contests that solidify his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
