The investigation into the killing of a police inspector in Akure, Ondo State, has reportedly spiralled into widespread raids, arbitrary arrests, and extortion across several communities in the state capital.
Reporters had earlier reported that the inspector, recently transferred from the Anti-Cultism Unit to B-Division Police Station, was stabbed to death on Wednesday at Oke Arata, beside Arakale, by suspected cult members.
Eyewitnesses identified the alleged killers as Oladapo Oluwaseun, popularly known as “Choco Milo” of the Eiye Confraternity, and two others—Shina and Y2K—linked to the Aye Confraternity. Oluwaseun, an appointee and loyalist of Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa, is among those already arrested.
However, residents say the aftermath of the killing has taken a disturbing turn.
Indiscriminate Raids and Mass Arrests
Multiple sources told SaharaReporters that police operatives have launched sweeping raids across Akure metropolis since the murder, arresting numerous youths and residents with no known ties to the incident.
Communities frequently mentioned include Odige, Oke Aro, Oke Ijebu, NEPA, Idi Agba, and surrounding neighbourhoods.
“People are being dragged out of their homes, shops, and even their rooms,” a resident said. “Most have nothing to do with the murder of the inspector. They’re just picking people at random.”
Extortion Allegations: “Bail Yourself With ₦100,000”
Residents also allege that many of those arrested are being forced to pay large sums—sometimes up to ₦100,000—to secure their release.
Sources describe the situation as police officers “weaponising a tragic incident for personal enrichment,” despite several principal suspects already being in custody.
Detainees are reportedly being held at B-Division, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and other tactical units of the Ondo State Police Command.
The police have not released any official statement addressing the allegations.
Background: A Long History of Political-Backed Thuggery
Reporters previously reported that “Choco Milo” was among thugs who attacked peaceful demonstrators, including activist Omoyele Sowore, during the June 12 pro-democracy protests in Akure.
Sowore had accused the Ondo State Police Command of collaborating with hired thugs to brutalise protesters.
In September 2025, the Ondo State Government appointed Oluwaseun and four others—some accused of attacking activists on June 12—as coordinators of tricycle (keke) riders in Akure South. Their appointment letters were signed by the governor’s Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Comrade Bola Taiwo.
Growing Public Concern
Residents fear that the killing of the inspector is now being used as justification for harassment and extortion across Akure.
“This is clearly against the ethics, discipline, and standards of the Force,” one source stressed. “People are suffering for a crime they know nothing about.”
As of Friday, the Ondo State Police Command has yet to address the allegations of indiscriminate arrests, abuse of power, and extortion linked to the ongoing investigation.
