A fatal road accident at Majidun, inward Ogolonto, Ikorodu Road, Lagos, has claimed the life of a woman and left six others seriously injured, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
According to LASTMA, the crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus, registration number EPE 494 XM, and a stationary tipper truck. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus, chartered to ferry passengers to a programme in Ogijo, experienced sudden brake failure while reportedly speeding recklessly. The driver lost control, crashing violently into the parked tipper truck.
The impact killed an adult female passenger instantly, while five women and one man sustained severe injuries. They were rushed to Benic Special Hospital for emergency treatment, while the deceased was taken to General Hospital, Ikorodu, for formal documentation.
In a statement signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, it was noted:
“The brutal impact resulted in the instantaneous death of an adult female passenger, while five female occupants and one male sustained severe and life-threatening injuries. While all injured casualties were rushed to nearby Benic Special Hospital, the remains of the deceased were immediately transferred into the custody of security personnel for urgent formal documentation at General Hospital, Ikorodu.”
LASTMA operatives swiftly apprehended both the tipper truck driver, who reportedly tried to flee, and the bus driver. Both were handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division for comprehensive investigation.
Efforts were also made to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow toward Ikorodu Garage.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed profound grief over the incident, extending condolences to the bereaved family and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
He further urged motorists to exercise caution, stressing that overspeeding severely reduces a driver’s ability to respond to sudden mechanical failures or unforeseen hazards, often resulting in catastrophic consequences.
“LASTMA remains committed to protecting lives and promoting a safer motoring culture across Lagos State,” Bakare-Oki affirmed.
