The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on political parties in Osun State to conduct their primaries strictly in accordance with the law ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
The call was made by Dr. Mutiu Agboke, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Osun, in a statement issued by INEC Public Relations Officer, Olurode Musa, on Monday in Osogbo. INEC has scheduled the governorship election for August 8, 2026.
Dr. Agboke emphasized that adherence to the Electoral Act 2022, as well as the Commission’s Guidelines and Regulations, is critical to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful primaries. He noted that party primaries have often been a source of pre-election litigations, which could be minimized if parties follow the prescribed procedures.
“INEC urges all political parties to ensure that their primaries are transparent, democratic, and peaceful, giving all aspirants equal opportunities to participate,” he said.
According to INEC, the primaries for the 2026 governorship election are scheduled to hold between November 24 and December 15, 2025. The Commission also assured parties of its readiness to provide necessary support and guidance to ensure compliance with the law.
Dr. Agboke further appealed to stakeholders, including security agencies, to assist INEC in facilitating peaceful and credible primaries. He warned that the Commission would monitor party activities closely and take lawful action against any party that violates electoral laws.
