A six-classroom block in Oke Baale community, Osogbo LGA, Osun State, remains unbuilt despite ₦12.6 million being released for its construction in November 2024. The funds, confirmed on the GovSpend platform, were disbursed to Stargate Global Resources Mega Concepts Ltd, yet no construction has taken place.
Unsafe Learning Conditions
The abandoned project has forced children to continue learning in dangerously dilapidated school buildings, raising serious concerns about oversight and accountability. Residents say no contractor has visited the site since the funds were released, leaving classrooms unusable.
Civic technology platform Monitng, which monitors public projects, reported:
“The school buildings the children depend on are in an advanced state of decay. The roof is caving in, leaving classrooms exposed to rain and harsh weather. The walls are cracked, weak, and peeling. Floors are worn out, and every corridor shows signs of long-term neglect. Classrooms remain shut, with no furniture for pupils. This is not just dilapidation, it is a collapse of responsibility.”
Community members confirmed:
“No contractor has been seen in the area and no renovation or construction has occurred since the funds were released. A year later, the project cannot be traced, and the community’s children continue to learn in buildings that pose risks to their safety.”
Call for Accountability
Monitng condemned the situation as a tragic state of education in parts of Osun State, noting:
“If ₦12.6 million meant to transform this school has vanished without impact, both the federal representative at the National Assembly and the state government have failed to prioritise the future of these children.”
The platform urged authorities to take immediate action:
“We call on the ICPC to urgently investigate why disbursed funds have not met their intended purpose. We also call on @NBRRI_official to publicly account for this project and ensure immediate, transparent execution. Communities like Oke Baale deserve functioning classrooms, not abandoned promises and collapsing buildings.”
The abandoned school project highlights the critical need for transparency, oversight, and accountability in Nigeria’s education sector, as pupils continue to face unsafe learning environments.
