There is growing tension in Damaturu, Yobe State, following the alleged assault of a Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) reporter by CSP Zakari Diba, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Yobe Government House.
The incident occurred on Thursday at the State Assembly Complex during the 2026 budget presentation by Governor Mai Mala Buni, sparking widespread condemnation from media groups and the public.
The Yobe Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) demanded the suspension of the CSO, a thorough investigation, possible prosecution, and adequate compensation for the victim. Abdulmumin Kolo Gulani, Yobe State Focal Person on Cyber and Information Technology, also called for Diba’s removal from the Government House. The NTA Damaturu chapel echoed these calls for swift action.
Authorities, including the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture and the Police Commissioner, intervened to pacify journalists, who had threatened to boycott the budget presentation.
In response, CSP Diba apologized, stating that a miscommunication led to the incident and emphasizing his respect for journalists. He said:
“I cannot deliberately molest a journalist. I didn’t even know this guy was a journalist when I was trying to control the crowd… What happened is unfortunate, and I have apologized along with my Commissioner.”
The incident has reignited discussions on the need for respectful engagement between security personnel and the press in Yobe State.
