Over 230 pupils at Tufa Central Primary School in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State, are learning in a building on the verge of collapse, according to Tracka, BudgIt’s public expenditure tracking platform.
The classrooms, which have been in disrepair for more than 10 years, feature collapsed roofs, broken windows, and weakened walls, making the environment unsafe for students. Tracka expressed concern that children continue to attend classes under fear and poor learning conditions.
“Imagine children going to school with the fear that their school building might collapse anytime. They sit on the floor to learn and endure even more terrible conditions,” the organization said.
The deteriorating state of the school has also contributed to declining enrolment, as many parents feel it is unsafe to send their children there.
Tracka addressed a statement to Niger State Governor Umaru Bago and other officials, urging immediate action. The organization called for the construction and proper equipping of new classrooms to ensure safe and quality education for the pupils.
“We implore your office and the Niger State government to look into this immediately and ensure a new classroom is constructed and equipped so that the children of Tufa can access the quality education they deserve,” the statement read.
