The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully trained more than 75,000 youths in vocational skills through the Innovation Development and Effective in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) TVET Initiative.
Speaking at the launch of a six-month free training program for 100 participants in Agriculture and Aquaculture in Badagry, Lagos State, Mrs. Blessing Ogwu, National Project Coordinator, highlighted the initiative’s impact on youth empowerment.
Organized by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with SejFarms Consults Limited, the IDEAS-TVET Initiative aims to equip youths with practical skills for self-sufficiency and economic independence.
Ogwu stated:
“The programme started in late 2024, and we have now moved to the second cohort. The goal is to take youths off the streets and equip them with skills that enable them to be self-sustained. By the end of the programme, we plan to engage over 75,000 youths.”
She also commended the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the World Bank for their support in empowering young Nigerians.
Mr. Sejiro Oke-Tojinu, Managing Director of SejFarms Consults Ltd, emphasized that the participants, many of whom are agriculture graduates, will gain the knowledge and practical experience needed to become professional farmers and contribute to the government’s food security agenda.
Mr. Nurudeen Tiamiyu, the training coordinator, noted that participants would acquire hands-on experience across the entire agriculture value chain, preparing them for productive careers in the sector.
Local stakeholders also encouraged participants to make the most of the opportunity. Mr. Peter Dansu, media aide to Prince Sesi Whingan, lawmaker representing Badagry Federal Constituency, urged beneficiaries to leverage the program to become professional farmers. Mr. Augustine Kiki, representing Lagos State Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, and Mrs. Toying PoT-Balogun, Assistant Chief Fisheries Officer, advised participants to take the training seriously and use it to bring pride to Lagos State while securing their own futures.
The IDEAS-TVET Initiative continues to reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to youth development, skills acquisition, and sustainable employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
