The Oyo State Police Command has issued a public safety warning following a surge in drowning incidents across the state. Residents, religious organisations, and operators of recreational facilities have been urged to take urgent measures to prevent avoidable deaths.
In an advisory signed by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, Police Public Relations Officer, the Command cautioned members of the public to exercise extreme care around rivers, dams, streams, swimming pools, and other water-related locations. Negligence and poor supervision, the police noted, have continued to result in fatalities.
The advisory included specific instructions for:
- Churches and religious organisations: Worship centres near water bodies must implement safety measures, ensuring children do not access nearby rivers or streams unsupervised.
- Hotels and recreational facilities: Swimming pools must be clearly marked with safety notices, supervised at all times, and equipped with functional rescue tools. Facilities are encouraged to employ trained lifeguards, swimming tutors, and instructors to guide users.
- Parents and guardians: Children should not be allowed to swim or visit rivers, wells, or other water areas without close adult supervision. Wells must be securely covered, and any damaged covers repaired immediately. Access to wells should be restricted and locked when not in use.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, described drowning deaths as “unacceptable and avoidable,” stressing that public safety is a shared responsibility.
“Members of the public are encouraged to remain safety-conscious at all times and to promptly report any emergency situation to the nearest police station. The Oyo State Police Command remains committed to the protection of lives and property across the state,” CP Haruna stated.
