Palestinian Journalist Saleh Aljafarawi Killed in Gaza City Clashes

Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafarawi, 28, was killed during clashes in Gaza City, just days after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect.

According to Palestinian sources, Aljafarawi was shot by members of an Israel-linked armed militia while reporting in the Sabra neighbourhood. The journalist, known for his frontline coverage of Israel’s two-year war on Gaza, was found dead wearing his “PRESS” flak jacket. He had been missing since Sunday morning.

Footage verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency showed his body being transported on a truck. Local reports said fighting broke out between Hamas security forces and fighters from the Doghmush clan, though this has not been officially confirmed.

A senior Gaza Interior Ministry official told Al Jazeera that the clashes involved a group “affiliated with the [Israeli] occupation” and that security forces had surrounded the area. The official also accused the militia of attacking displaced people returning to their homes.

Aljafarawi had previously spoken of the dangers he faced documenting the war, saying he lived “in fear every second” due to Israeli threats against him.

His death adds to the more than 270 journalists killed in Gaza since Israel’s assault began in October 2023 — the deadliest conflict for media workers in modern history.

The killing comes as Gaza’s fragile ceasefire entered its third day, ahead of a planned hostage-prisoner exchange. Meanwhile, world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, are set to meet in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, for a summit aimed at solidifying the truce and promoting regional peace.
