The Prerna Sthal in the Parliament complex, a dedicated space for statues of national leaders and freedom fighters, is undergoing a significant revamp to enhance accessibility, visual appeal, and landscaping, officials said.
Key Upgrades
- Lighting & Pathways: Specialised lighting effects and a curved visitor track have been added to enhance visibility and the overall experience.
- Landscaping & Greenery: Two short stone boundary walls have been removed, and green lawns have been expanded to aid rainwater percolation and harvesting.
- Pavement: Stone pavement was initially planned for the entire area but was reduced to increase open green spaces.
- Security Structures: Old temporary cabins have been removed, and necessary porta cabins have been painted green to blend with the surroundings.
- Water Bodies: Proposed water features were removed in the final development stage.
Statues on Display
Prerna Sthal houses 15 statues of national icons, which were earlier scattered across the Parliament complex. Notable statues include:
- Mahatma Gandhi
- B.R. Ambedkar (installed in 1967, the oldest in Prerna Sthal)
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
- Birsa Munda
- Maharana Pratap
- Rani Chennamma
- Lala Lajpat Rai
- Motilal Nehru
- Basaveshwara
- Devi Lal
The revamp, supervised by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, addresses earlier criticism that key statues, including Gandhi and Ambedkar, were moved to a less visible corner behind the Parliament Library. The improvements aim to make the space more accessible and publicly engaging.
