The Kansas City Chiefs continued their resurgence in the 2024 NFL season as superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes delivered another masterclass, throwing three second-half touchdowns to guide his team to a 28–7 victory over the Washington Commanders on Monday night.
After a shaky start featuring two first-half interceptions, Mahomes rediscovered his trademark composure and precision to lead the Chiefs to their third consecutive win, improving their season record to 5–3.
Mahomes Overcomes Early Struggles to Dominate Second Half
The opening 30 minutes tested Mahomes’ patience, as the Commanders’ defense capitalized on his two early mistakes. But the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) responded in typical fashion — by taking over the game after halftime.
Mahomes completed 25 of 34 passes for 299 yards, connecting with Kareem Hunt, Rashee Rice, and Terry McLaurin for second-half touchdowns that sealed the Chiefs’ dominant win. His ability to adjust and exploit defensive gaps underscored why he remains the NFL’s most dynamic quarterback.
Head coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes’ resilience after the game:
“Patrick just keeps finding ways to win. Even when things start rough, his leadership pulls the team through.”
Travis Kelce Shines in Vintage Performance
Star tight end Travis Kelce turned back the clock with one of his best outings of the season. The 36-year-old caught six passes for 99 yards and added a touchdown, reminding fans why his connection with Mahomes remains one of the NFL’s most feared partnerships.
Kelce, who briefly contemplated retirement after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, recommitted to another season in March. The three-time Super Bowl champion said he’s relishing every moment on the field alongside long-time rival and friend Zach Ertz, who now plays for the Commanders.
“We’re cherishing every single one of these games,” Kelce said. “You never know how many you’ve got left, so I’m enjoying the ride.”
Chiefs Extend Winning Run and Eye Playoff Push
With the win, Kansas City has now triumphed in four of their last five games, building momentum in the AFC playoff race. Their offense, which had looked inconsistent earlier in the season, seems to be clicking again as Mahomes continues to develop chemistry with young receivers like Rice.
The Chiefs’ defense also deserves credit, limiting the Commanders to just one touchdown and forcing multiple turnovers that shifted momentum firmly in Kansas City’s favor.
Commanders Continue to Struggle
For the Washington Commanders, the loss marks their fifth defeat in eight games, dropping their record to 3–5. Despite some early promise under quarterback Sam Howell, Washington’s offense failed to capitalize on two first-half interceptions and sputtered in the red zone.
Tight end Zach Ertz managed several key receptions but couldn’t find the end zone against a disciplined Kansas City defense. The Commanders’ inability to protect Howell and sustain drives remains a growing concern as their playoff hopes fade.
Looking Ahead
Next week, the Kansas City Chiefs face a tough test against division rivals Las Vegas Raiders, while the Commanders will look to regroup when they travel to face the New York Giants.
As Mahomes continues to perform at an MVP-caliber level, the Chiefs look poised to reclaim their dominance in the AFC. With Kelce back in form and the offense firing on all cylinders, Kansas City’s pursuit of another Super Bowl run is well and truly back on track.
