Genoa have confirmed the departure of head coach Patrick Vieira, with the Serie A side rooted to the bottom of the league table. The former Arsenal and France legend leaves the Italian club by mutual consent following a winless start to the 2025/26 Serie A campaign.
🟥 Genoa’s Serie A Struggles Under Vieira
Vieira, 49, took charge of Genoa in November 2024 with the club positioned 17th in the table. In his first season, he successfully steered the struggling side to safety with a 13th-place finish, thanks to a record of 8 wins and 9 draws in 26 games. That strong start had given hope that the former midfielder could build sustained stability in Liguria.
However, the 2025/26 season has presented a very different story. Genoa have failed to win any of their nine Serie A matches, suffering six losses, including five from their last six fixtures. Their only victories this season have come in the Coppa Italia, offering little respite in a campaign dominated by poor league form.
A club statement on Saturday announced Vieira’s departure, noting:
“The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown throughout their work and wishes them all the best for their future careers.”
🤝 Departure Led by Vieira
Reports from BBC Sport confirm that Vieira initiated discussions about his departure on Friday night, with both sides agreeing it was time to move on. As the downward spiral continued, it appeared clear that a change was needed to revive Genoa’s fortunes.
🧠Vieira’s Journey as a Manager
Patrick Vieira enjoyed a glittering playing career, winning multiple Premier League titles with Arsenal, Serie A trophies with Inter Milan, and World Cup and European Championship honors with France. After retiring from playing in 2011, the transition to coaching saw him manage:
- New York City FC (2016–18) – Led the MLS side to back-to-back playoff appearances
- OGC Nice (2018–20) – Finished 7th in Ligue 1 during his first season
- Crystal Palace (2021–23) – Reached FA Cup semi-finals before dismissal after a 12-game winless run
- RC Strasbourg (2024) – Left by mutual consent months before joining Genoa
With his managerial pathway now taking another twist, the question remains: where will Vieira head next?
🔄 What’s Next for Genoa?
With the club sitting bottom of Serie A and desperate for a turnaround, the search for a new head coach is underway. The next appointment will be expected to quickly restore stability and fight to preserve the club’s top-flight status.
