Bayer Leverkusen secured their first Champions League victory of the 2025/26 season with a 1-0 win over Benfica, as substitute Patrik Schick capitalized on defensive errors from Jose Mourinho’s side in Lisbon.
The Czech striker scored the decisive goal in the 65th minute, just eight minutes after replacing Christian Kofane. Schick’s first effort was smartly saved by Benfica keeper Anatoliy Trubin, but the hosts failed to clear the danger, allowing Schick to head home the rebound.
Benfica Dominate but Fail to Score
Despite managing 21 shots to Leverkusen’s seven, Benfica wasted several key opportunities to take the lead. Mourinho’s side hit the woodwork twice in the first half through Dodi Lukebakio and veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi.
Just before halftime, Benfica were inches away again from breaking the deadlock. Lukebakio had a fierce strike saved by former Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, Otamendi forced another stop, and Loic Bade made a crucial block to deny Vangelis Pavlidis.
Pavlidis, who entered the match with five goals in his last four Champions League home games, missed a clear chance in the second half when he failed to round Flekken from close range.
Leverkusen Climb the Table, Benfica Remain Winless
The defeat leaves Benfica bottom of the standings, ranked 35th in the 36-team league phase, after suffering their fourth consecutive Champions League loss this season.
In contrast, Bayer Leverkusen move up to 21st place, gaining valuable points after a slow start to their European campaign.
