PDP Condemns Court Ruling Halting Convention as “Assault on Democracy”

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized a Federal High Court judgment that ordered a halt to its planned elective National Convention, labeling the decision an “assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.”

In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party asserted that the ruling by Justice Kolawole Omitosho does not prevent it from continuing with preparatory processes for the convention. The party has directed its lawyers to immediately appeal the judgment.

Defiance and a Path Forward

Despite the court’s order, the PDP remains defiant. Ologunagba stated that the judgment “does not vitiate its ability to proceed with the processes and activities towards the National Convention.”

The party is leaning on a recent Supreme Court judgment that affirms the supremacy of a political party in managing its internal affairs. Citing this precedent, the PDP charged its “members, Chapters, and Organs to remain steadfast and focused on preparations” for the convention.

The elective National Convention, scheduled for November 15th and 16th in Ibadan, Oyo State, is intended to elect new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and amend the party’s constitution.

Commitment to Multi-Party Democracy

The statement, titled “PDP planned National Convention not vitiated by court,” underscores the party’s position as it navigates yet another internal crisis. While expressing its displeasure, the PDP reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law through the appeal process.

“The PDP as the leading opposition Party in Nigeria committed to the Rule of Law has accordingly directed its lawyers to take immediate action to appeal this judgment,” Ologunagba said, framing the legal battle as part of the party’s “unwavering determination to uphold, defend and promote multi-party democracy in our country.”
