PDP Slams Tinubu’s Trip Cancellation, Urges Him to Relocate to Kebbi Amid Terror Attacks

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to cancel his scheduled trips to South Africa and Angola, calling it a “perfunctory gesture” and a clear example of “tokenism” in the face of escalating insecurity.

In a statement titled “Tinubu’s Trip Cancellation: An Exemplar of Tokenism,” issued on Thursday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Comrade Ini Ememobong criticised the presidency for portraying the cancelled trip as evidence of concern over the worsening security situation, particularly in northern Nigeria.

“While the cancellation may appear sympathetic to the abduction of the Maga schoolgirls and other acts of violence, it is nothing more than a symbolic gesture,” the statement said.

The opposition party urged that real leadership requires concrete action, not superficial moves. It called on President Tinubu to temporarily relocate to Kebbi State and other areas affected by armed conflict, arguing that such a step would challenge security agencies to act decisively and boost the morale of troops on the frontlines.

“As President and Commander-in-Chief, Tinubu must not remain in the comfort of the Presidential Villa while 25 schoolgirls are missing and insecurity grips parts of the country. True leadership demands leading from the front during moments of grave national challenge,” the PDP said.

The party also highlighted the recent attacks in Kwara State, noting that insecurity has become a daily reality for Nigerians. It criticised the administration’s reliance on denials, rationalisations, empty assurances, and superficial gestures such as the cancelled trip.

“Without concrete and sustained action, this trip cancellation amounts to a media stunt aimed at currying public favour rather than confronting the urgent task of securing lives and property,” the statement added.

The PDP warned that public patience is running thin and emphasised that Nigerians demand decisive leadership, strategic action, and tangible support for security forces, rather than political optics designed for appearances.
