Plateau Imam Who Sheltered 262 Christians Passes Away

Abubakar Abdullahi, the revered Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, who famously protected 262 Christians during violent communal clashes, has died at the age of 90.

His son, Saleh Abubakar, confirmed to Daily Trust that the cleric passed away on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, ten days after being admitted.

“He was initially diagnosed with a heart condition and had periodic check-ups, but his health remained unstable,” Saleh said.

Imam Abubakar is survived by 19 children – 12 sons and seven daughters.

In June 2018, during violent faith-based clashes affecting ten villages in Barkin Ladi, he courageously sheltered 262 Christians in his mosque and home, saving them from imminent harm. His bravery earned him international recognition, including the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the United States Department of State.

The late Imam will be laid to rest today in Nghar village after Juma’at prayers, honoring his legacy of courage, compassion, and interfaith solidarity.
