PM Modi Condemns Reported Attack on Putin’s Residence, Urges Focus on Diplomacy

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed “deep concern” over reports alleging attacks on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, emphasizing that diplomacy remains the only credible path to peace.

Reacting on social media, Modi said, “Deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them.” The remarks follow Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s claim that Ukraine attempted to strike Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region using 91 long-range drones over December 28–29. Lavrov described the act as “reckless” and equivalent to “state terrorism,” while noting that Russian air defences intercepted and destroyed all the drones. It remains unclear whether Putin was at the residence at the time.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the claims as a “complete fabrication,” asserting that Russia was using the allegation to justify ongoing military aggression and avoid necessary steps toward peace. Ukrainian officials stressed that Kyiv does not take actions that would undermine diplomacy.

The reported incident drew international reactions. US President Donald Trump, who has been mediating peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine, said he was “very angry” upon learning about the alleged attack from Putin during a phone call. Trump criticized the timing and nature of the attack, stating that it was inappropriate amid ongoing negotiations. China also called for restraint, urging parties to abide by the principles of no battlefield spillover and no escalation.

India’s stance underscores its consistent emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, even as tensions remain high and conflicting narratives continue to emerge. Modi’s comments align with India’s broader approach of strategic autonomy, advocating for peaceful solutions while maintaining engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv.
