NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed his gratitude to the people of Maharashtra as the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance moved towards a commanding lead in the state’s civic body elections, describing the results as a reaffirmation of the strong bond between the alliance and the electorate.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister lauded the “enthusiastic people of the state” for endorsing the NDA’s agenda of public welfare and governance. “I express heartfelt gratitude to all the people of Maharashtra. This mandate will give greater momentum to progress and is a celebration of the glorious culture connected with the state,” he wrote.
PM Modi also acknowledged the role of party workers across Maharashtra, praising their tireless efforts in campaigning and countering opposition narratives. “I am proud of every NDA worker across Maharashtra for work tirelessly day and night. While sharing information about the performance of our alliance, they also clearly underlined our vision for the times ahead and effectively countered the false allegations of the opposition. My heartfelt best wishes to them,” he added.
The message came as initial trends indicated a decisive victory for the Mahayuti alliance, which is set to take control of 25 of the 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP emerged as the largest party with 84 seats, while Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) trailed with 72 seats, underscoring the alliance’s resurgence in the state.
According to political analysts, the results signal the consolidation of support for the NDA in urban Maharashtra, with the party capitalizing on rifts within the opposition and multi-cornered contests that split traditional vote banks.
PM Modi’s congratulatory note highlighted the government’s narrative that the victory reflects public endorsement of development and governance-focused policies, and it reinforces the alliance’s mandate ahead of forthcoming state-level and national political contests.
The Maharashtra civic polls, which witnessed voting across 29 municipal corporations on January 15, were closely watched as an early indicator of urban political sentiment in India’s second-most populous state. With the Mahayuti poised to control a majority of the key municipal bodies, the results are likely to shape the political discourse in the state and boost the NDA’s momentum ahead of future elections.
