Investigative journalist Fejiro Oliver narrowly avoided arrest on Thursday when policemen raided his office in Abuja over pending defamation cases.
The officers, reportedly in plain clothes, identified themselves as members of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Jonathan Towuru, and claimed to have a court warrant for Oliver’s arrest. However, they could not execute the arrest as he was not in the office at the time.
Speaking to DAILY POST, Oliver described the raid as a “witch-hunt” and said he fears for his life. He vowed to visit the Police Headquarters in Abuja personally the following day.
“I await them tomorrow as I will also personally go to the police headquarters myself,” he said.
The raid comes as Oliver faces multiple defamation suits. On Thursday, he appeared at the Federal High Court, Asaba Division, Delta State, over two cases brought against him by the police on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone.
He was also in court on Wednesday, facing a defamation case filed by Stella Okotete, a politician whose ministerial nomination was rejected by the Senate following allegations of certificate forgery. Oliver’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, requested that Okotete’s case in Court 2 be consolidated with a similar defamation case filed by lawmaker Joel Thomas Onowakpor in Court 3. The court adjourned the hearing for December 9, 2025, with Oliver expected to appear for both cases.
This is not Oliver’s first run-in with police over these matters. In September 2025, he was abducted from his Abuja office on the orders of Governor Oborevwori, flown to Delta State, and detained for weeks before being arraigned and remanded in prison. He was later released after meeting bail conditions.
