Nigerian police retirees staged a protest at the National Assembly on Wednesday, calling for their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and urging lawmakers to address years of hardship under the system.
The former officers gathered in large numbers at the main entrance of the Assembly, chanting, singing, and holding placards highlighting their demands. Messages included: “NASS: Save us and the future of our children. Exit us from CPS” and “We ask for total removal from the police contributory pension.”
The protesters warned they would continue their demonstrations until concrete legislative action was taken to exempt them from the scheme.
Wednesday’s protest follows earlier demonstrations this year led by human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. On July 21, 2025, and September 30, 2025, Sowore joined retirees in Abuja to demand better welfare, improved pay, and exit from the CPS, describing the arrangement as a “Ponzi scheme.”
The retirees insist that their continued advocacy seeks to secure fair treatment and financial stability for former police officers and their families.
