Politics Not for Rascals, Jonathan Insists

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is being undermined by reckless political behaviour, emphasizing that politics should be reserved for those committed to nation-building, not destruction.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation—which also marked his 68th birthday—Jonathan stressed:

  • Leadership must be rooted in responsibility, nation-building, and restraint.
  • Democratic stability requires civility, accountability, and cooperation between government and citizens.
  • Leaders must protect lives and ensure the security of citizens while safeguarding democratic institutions.

Jonathan highlighted that his foundation’s decade-long work focuses on diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, mediation, and strengthening democratic institutions.

Tributes and endorsements:

  • President Bola Tinubu, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, praised Jonathan’s 2015 concession of defeat as a defining moment that preserved Nigeria’s democracy, noting that his post-office conduct sets a standard for public service and peace leadership.
  • Newly elected PDP national chairman Taminu Turaki described the foundation as a respected African institution in peacebuilding and democratic strengthening.

Jonathan’s key message: politics is for constructive leaders who serve the nation, not for rascals or those seeking personal gain, and democracy thrives when leaders place the national interest above personal ambition.
