The Formula 1 calendar will see the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2027 and 2028, bringing back one of the most thrilling circuits in recent F1 history. The race will take place at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, a venue known for its challenging layout and scenic, hilly terrain.
Portimão: A Fan-Favorite Circuit Returns
The Algarve International Circuit, located near the southern coast of Portugal, hosted two F1 events during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Despite its rural location, which has led to some access difficulties, Portimão has been praised by drivers and fans alike for its fast, undulating track that rewards skill and precision.
At 2.89 miles in length, the circuit offers a series of sweeping corners and elevation changes that create exciting racing opportunities. Drivers often describe it as one of the most technically demanding tracks on the calendar, making it a fan-favorite for both drivers and spectators.
Replacement for the Dutch Grand Prix
The return of the Portuguese GP will coincide with the departure of the Dutch Grand Prix from the F1 calendar, which will be held at Zandvoort for the final time next year. Portugal’s re-entry ensures that fans in southern Europe continue to enjoy high-octane racing in a picturesque setting.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali commented on the announcement, saying:
“I’m delighted to see Portimão return to the Formula 1 calendar and for the sport to continue to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase. The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats. The interest and demand to host a Formula 1 grand prix is the highest that it has ever been.”
A Track with a Legendary History
The Portuguese Grand Prix has a rich F1 history, with memorable races in previous decades and during its Covid-era return. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Mercedes, won both the 2020 and 2021 events at Portimão. His victory in 2020 was historic, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91 Grand Prix wins.
Hamilton’s 2021 triumph further cemented his status as one of the sport’s greatest drivers. The combination of Portimão’s challenging track layout and Hamilton’s skill created two highly competitive and entertaining races that left fans on the edge of their seats.
Why Portimão is Perfect for F1 Fans
The circuit’s hilly terrain and flowing corners make it a standout on the F1 calendar. Its rural setting offers a unique viewing experience, and the track’s design produces unpredictable races, where overtaking and strategy play a huge role. Fans attending the Portuguese GP can expect spectacular on-track action, with plenty of opportunities for dramatic moments from the opening lap to the checkered flag.
The return of the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2027 and 2028 not only fills the gap left by Zandvoort but also brings a much-loved track back to Formula 1 racing, ensuring thrilling competition and unforgettable experiences for fans worldwide.
