Powys Confirmed as Host of 2027 National Eisteddfod

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is set to return to Powys in 2027, marking the first time the iconic festival will be held in the region in over a decade. Organisers announced the news today, highlighting the festival’s enduring role in celebrating the Welsh language, culture, music, and arts.

The annual National Eisteddfod, held in a different Welsh location each summer, has been a cornerstone of Welsh culture since its inception in 1861, attracting tens of thousands of visitors and competitors each year.

Festival Preparations Begin in Powys

Preparations for the 2027 festival are scheduled to start in January 2025, with organisers encouraging local residents to get involved in the community project. A public meeting will take place at Glatwymyn Hall on 13 January, offering people the chance to participate in planning committees and volunteer for the festival.

Key roles are also open for nominations, including chair, vice-chairs of culture and strategy, chair of the local fund, and executive team secretary, with submissions closing on 20 January 2025.

Officials Highlight Cultural Significance

Cllr Glyn Preston of Powys Council emphasised the festival’s importance, saying it would “showcase the richness of Welsh culture” and “bring communities together.” He added: “We look forward to sharing an unforgettable week of music, literature, art, and drama with everyone who joins us.”

Betsan Moses, Chief Executive of the Eisteddfod, expressed her excitement, stating: “We’re delighted to announce that Powys will host the National Eisteddfod in 2027. I very much hope that local people will join us to prepare for the festival over the next eighteen months.”

Nic Parry, President of the Eisteddfod Court, added: “I’m looking forward to the next two years and getting to know our teams and committees across the area as we work together to bring the 2027 Eisteddfod to life. I’m grateful for all those who have contributed to the festival so far.”

Past and Future Eisteddfod Highlights

This year’s 2025 National Eisteddfod, held in Isycoed, Wrexham, welcomed over 150,000 attendees, showcasing the very best in Welsh-language art, music, drama, and literature. The festival alternates annually between north and south Wales, fostering a nationwide celebration of culture.

Looking ahead, the 2026 National Eisteddfod (Eisteddfod Genedlaethol y Garreg Las) will take place in Llantwd, north Pembrokeshire, from 1–8 August 2026, continuing the tradition of vibrant cultural festivities before Powys takes the spotlight in 2027.
