President Bola Tinubu is set to embark on a two-nation diplomatic trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, as part of one of his busiest international schedules this year. The visits will see him attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit and the 7th African Union–European Union Summit.
According to a statement from the Presidency, signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president will first attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg from November 22 to 23, themed “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”, addressing topics such as climate change, energy transitions, food systems, artificial intelligence, and disaster risk reduction.
Following the G20 Summit, Tinubu will proceed to Luanda for the AU-EU Summit scheduled for November 24 to 25, which will focus on development, climate change, inclusivity, infrastructure, and regional collaboration. He is expected to hold bilateral meetings to advance his Renewed Hope Agenda and discuss regional and international peace, security, and development.
The Nigerian delegation will include Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake, Trade and Investment Minister Jumoke Oduwole, and NIA Director-General Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
The international trip comes as security challenges escalate at home. Terrorists currently hold 25 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, while several communities in Kwara, Kaduna, and Zamfara face repeated bandit attacks.
The Kebbi State Police confirmed the Maga attack left one staff member dead and another injured. Security forces, including police tactical units, military personnel, and vigilante groups, have been deployed to rescue the abducted students and secure the area.
