President Tinubu Warns Governors: FAAC Allocations May Be Slashed Over LG Autonomy

President Bola Tinubu has threatened to reduce states’ allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) if governors continue to delay implementing financial autonomy for local governments, as mandated by the Supreme Court.

The warning was issued on Friday night during the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Tinubu emphasised his administration’s commitment to enforcing the apex court ruling, which guarantees financial independence for local government councils across Nigeria. He warned that deliberate resistance by state governors could compel him to act unilaterally.

“The Supreme Court has said, ‘give them their money directly.’ If you wait for my Executive Order, because I have the knife, I have the yam, I will cut it. I’m just being very respectful and understanding with my governors. Otherwise, if you don’t start to implement it, FAAC after FAAC, you will see your allocation dwindling,” the President said.

Highlighting the importance of local government autonomy for grassroots development and democratic governance, Tinubu appealed for cooperation and warned that resistance undermines constitutional order.

Beyond the autonomy issue, the President called for unity and tolerance within the APC, reminding party leaders of the need to uphold progressive ideals and inclusive politics. He also expressed support for state policing to tackle insecurity and urged the National Assembly to work with the police to prevent abuses, describing the measure as vital for countering terrorism and banditry.

President Tinubu further backed increased participation of women in elective offices and opposed centralisation of the lottery business, arguing that it falls under state jurisdiction.

Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Tinubu’s political leadership, describing any challenge to his popularity ahead of the 2027 elections as futile. APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, also announced plans for nationwide e-registration of party members, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Progressive Governors Forum Chairman, Governor Hope Uzodimma, commended the President’s strategic reforms.
