The Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced the appointment of Professor Offiong Offiong as the institution’s 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor.

The announcement concludes the selection process that began on Thursday. Professor Offiong, a distinguished scholar of Chemistry, will succeed the outgoing VC, Prof. Florence Obi, when her tenure ends on December 1.

A true alumnus of the university, Prof. Offiong graduated from UNICAL with a BSc in Chemistry in 1984. He later earned his Ph.D. in Coordination/Inorganic Chemistry from the same institution in 1990, with part of his research supported by a DAAD scholarship in Germany.

He began his academic career as a graduate assistant in the Department of Chemistry in 1985 and attained the rank of Professor in 2002.
