Guwahati: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday emphasized that the family of Zubeen Garg, as well as the people of Assam, have the right to know the full circumstances surrounding the singer’s death in Singapore.

Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated singers, passed away on September 19, 2025, shortly before he was scheduled to perform at a concert in Singapore. Following his untimely death, the Assam Police arrested seven individuals, including the late singer’s cousin, on charges of murder, leading to widespread speculation and public concern in the state.

“I mentioned to the family that I would have liked to come under better circumstances, happier circumstances… It’s a tragedy that the whole state has faced. I spoke to the family, and they only said one thing to me: that we have lost our Zubeen and all we want is that the truth should be clear.”

During the visit, Gandhi stressed the need for the Assam government to conduct a transparent and swift investigationinto the events leading to Garg’s death, ensuring that his family receives full information about what transpired in Singapore.

“It is the duty of the government to quickly investigate what has happened, transparently investigate what has happened, and tell the family exactly what happened in Singapore,” Gandhi added.

Investigation Status

The Assam government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to probe the circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s death. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier stated that the SIT is expected to submit its report by end of November or early December 2025.

The probe comes amid public concern and growing demands for clarity and transparency, as speculation continues regarding the involvement of several individuals allegedly linked to the case.

Public and Family Concerns

Zubeen Garg’s death has been a major shock in Assam, where he was not only a celebrated singer but also a cultural icon whose music resonated across generations. Rahul Gandhi highlighted that the singer’s family and the state’s residents deserve a clear understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The focus, according to Gandhi, is not only on justice for the deceased but also on ensuring that state mechanisms operate transparently, providing confidence to the public and the family that the investigation is being conducted professionally and fairly.

Significance of Transparency

Gandhi’s call underscores the importance of accountability in high-profile cases, especially those involving public figures whose deaths provoke widespread public attention. Ensuring timely and transparent updates from the SIT will be critical in maintaining trust between the authorities and the public.

The visit also highlighted the broader emotional impact of Garg’s death, as fans across Assam and beyond continue to mourn. By visiting the family and paying respects at the cremation site, Rahul Gandhi reinforced the need for empathy, dignity, and clarity in handling sensitive investigations.

Conclusion

As the investigation proceeds, the people of Assam and Zubeen Garg’s family await answers. Rahul Gandhi’s statements reinforce the demand for transparency and accountability in the handling of this high-profile case.
