Raphinha Credits Hansi Flick for Barcelona Revival: “If Flick Hadn’t Come, I Would Have Left Barca”

Raphinha has emerged as one of Barcelona’s most influential players, and he openly credits manager Hansi Flick for revitalizing his career at Camp Nou. The Brazilian’s two-goal performance against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday secured Barcelona’s fourth consecutive Super Cup triumph and cemented his reputation as a decisive performer in the club’s biggest matches.

Once a player struggling for consistency, Raphinha’s journey at Barcelona has become a story of resilience, confidence, and tactical evolution.

Early Struggles at Barcelona

Raphinha joined Barcelona from Leeds United in July 2022, arriving with a reputation for flair and creativity. However, his early years at the club were marked by inconsistency and uncertainty. Over his first two seasons, he was frequently rotated, often appearing off the bench. Out of 76 possible matches, Raphinha made only 42 starts and appeared as a substitute 11 times.

Reflecting on that period, Raphinha admitted:

“There was a lot of self-doubt. I have a nasty habit of criticising myself heavily, so that pressure made me think about leaving.”

Like his teammate Ronald Araujo, who has previously worked on his mental wellbeing, Raphinha faced challenges adapting to life at a club under intense scrutiny.

Statistical Evidence of Growth

Raphinha’s numbers show a clear upward trajectory. In his first season (2022–23), he recorded 14 combined goals and assists, improving slightly to 15 in his second year. Last season, that figure almost doubled to 27 goal contributions, reflecting both increased playing time and growing influence on the pitch.

His knack for scoring in crucial moments has also emerged as a defining trait. Raphinha scored twice in the Super Cup semi-final, netted a last-minute winner in Barcelona’s 5-4 Champions League group stage victory over Benfica, and now delivered a brace against Real Madrid in the final.

Barcelona fans have noticed the change. Supporter Carlos said:

“He constantly breaks away to create attacking options, he’s generous with his passing, and most importantly, his accuracy has improved massively over the years.”

Hansi Flick: The Game-Changer

The arrival of Hansi Flick in May 2024 marked a turning point for Raphinha. The German manager’s faith and tactical adjustments have allowed the Brazilian to flourish.

“If Hansi Flick hadn’t come, I would have left Barca. He changed everything,” Raphinha admitted. “He told me that I was going to be important. That’s what a player needs—confidence.”

The numbers back up Raphinha’s assessment. Under Xavi, he made 87 appearances, scoring 20 goals and providing 23 assists. Under Flick, in just 74 matches, he has already surpassed those totals with 45 goals and 26 assists.

Flick praised Raphinha’s impact:

“He has a dynamic, which affects the whole team. You can see he missed the first chance he had in the game, but for the second one, he was there, he shoots the first goal and gives the team more confidence. Rapha on the pitch is a lot of intensity, and we need this.”

Fans Recognize His Transformation

Barcelona supporters highlight that Raphinha’s transformation extends beyond statistics. Carlos explains:

“He arrived at a club that was in internal turmoil, without clear role models. Flick took a chance on him, and now he has a much clearer understanding of his role and responsibilities on the pitch. He defends his teammates, contributes enormously, and has great instincts and intelligence on the field.”

Fan Miquel Taberna summed it up:

“In a nutshell—confidence and maturity. He now plays less like a pure winger and more like an inside forward, making smarter runs, pressing better, and connecting more effectively with midfielders.”

Diego Sanchez added:

“His off-the-ball movement is pure gold for a team featuring players like Lamine Yamal or Pedri. His attitude and leadership have turned him into a true captain. Thanks to Hansi Flick, Raphinha has gone from almost being forgotten to someone who could end up in Barca history as one of the greatest Brazilian players.”

Raphinha: From Uncertainty to Hero Status

From nearly leaving the club to becoming a key figure in critical games, Raphinha’s journey is a testament to the importance of managerial trust, tactical clarity, and mental resilience. As Barcelona aim for continued domestic and European success, the Brazilian winger is now seen as indispensable, demonstrating that confidence and guidance can transform talent into legacy.

With his goal-scoring form, tactical versatility, and leadership, Raphinha looks set to play a central role in Barcelona’s future triumphs, fulfilling the potential that once seemed uncertain.
