SYDNEY, Australia — Reddit has criticized Australia’s imminent ban on social media use for under-16s, calling the legislation “legally erroneous,” while confirming it will comply with the new rules.
The world-first law, set to take effect December 10, 2025, restricts minors under 16 from using popular social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit. Failure to comply could lead to fines of up to Aus$49.5 million (US$33 million).
Reddit’s Response
In an official statement, Reddit said it disagreed with the scope, effectiveness, and privacy implications of the legislation but would implement changes to meet the requirements.
“By limiting account eligibility and putting identity tests on internet usage, this law undermines everyone’s right to free expression and privacy,” Reddit said.
The company highlighted that its platform, being a pseudonymous, text-based forum primarily used by adults, is arbitrarily included in the legislation, while other platforms were exempt. Reddit has not confirmed reports of a potential legal challenge.
Age Verification Measures
To comply with the law, Reddit plans to use an age-prediction model to identify users under 16. Accounts flagged as minors will be suspended. Additional safety features for users under 18 will also be rolled out globally.
The ban is expected to affect hundreds of thousands of Australian teenagers, with Instagram alone reporting around 350,000 users aged 13–15. Some platforms, including Roblox, Pinterest, and WhatsApp, are exempt, though the exemption list remains under review.
Government Statement
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed teens ahead of the law’s implementation, urging them to step away from screens:
“From December 10, if you’re under 16 you’re no longer allowed to have a social media account. Start a new sport, learn a new instrument, or spend quality time with friends and family — face to face.”
Authorities acknowledge that teens may attempt to circumvent the law using fake IDs or AI-generated photos, and regulators warn that no system will be 100% effective.
Global Implications
Australia’s legislation is being closely watched internationally. Malaysia has announced plans to block social media accounts for children under 16 next year, while New Zealand is considering similar restrictions.
