Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon has issued a public warning to her fans after discovering scammers impersonating her on social media platforms, including TikTok and Instagram. The Oscar-winning actress shared a heartfelt message in a TikTok video on January 14, cautioning followers to be vigilant and only engage with verified accounts.
Scammers Target Fans with Fake Accounts
In the video, Witherspoon, 49, explained that multiple accounts are pretending to be her in order to manipulate fans and steal personal information. She described the scammers’ methods:
“They go into people’s DMs, and they try to build a relationship, they try to extract personal information, plan meet up times.”
Witherspoon emphasized that these fraudulent accounts are not affiliated with her in any way, and she reassured fans:
“I would never, ever manipulate you. I would never reach out to you for money, for private information, or to create a meet-up time.”
Advice for Fans: Verify Before Engaging
The actress urged followers to check for verified badges on social media accounts before responding or sharing personal details. She added:
“Please look at these accounts that are doing this, and make sure they’re verified…please be careful out there.”
Witherspoon noted that these scams are widespread, saying:
“This is happening across the board, but it’s really upsetting to me that this is happening on such a large scale.”
Celebrity Impersonation Scams Are Increasing
Reese Witherspoon joins a growing list of celebrities warning fans about impersonation and online scams. In June 2025, Helen Mirren alerted fans to a fake charity operating under her name. Other notable figures including Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, and Tom Hanks have also issued warnings about fraudulent accounts targeting followers.
Why Fans Should Stay Vigilant
Social media impersonation scams often involve:
- Fake DMs claiming to be a celebrity
- Requests for money, personal details, or meet-ups
- Fraudulent promotions or charity campaigns
Fans are encouraged to report suspicious accounts and never share sensitive information online, even if the account appears to be a favorite celebrity.
Reese Witherspoon’s Message
The Legally Blonde and Big Little Lies star concluded her video with a personal plea:
“Please know, I would never, never reach out to you to manipulate you or take anything from you.”
Her warning serves as an important reminder for social media users to stay cautious, especially as celebrity impersonation scams continue to rise across platforms.
