Residents and motorists in Calabar, Cross River State, have criticized the Ministry of Environment for growing heaps of refuse littering major streets and strategic locations, raising health and sanitation concerns.
Despite monthly sanitation exercises, waste continues to accumulate at sites including Satellite Town (Sankara T-Junction), Atimbo by Access, Ediba after the footbridge, Atekong by Marian, Old Odukpani Road, Mbukpa Street by Ambo Lane, and Ekpo Abasi by Mayne Avenue. Residents warn that the situation could trigger disease outbreaks and obstruct traffic.
Residents like Ms. Patience Asuquo and Mr. Solomon Obi faulted the government for prioritizing festive decorations over proper waste management. Restaurant owners and commercial drivers also lamented the negative impact of flies, blocked roads, and poor hygiene on businesses and daily activities.
Experts highlighted that unmanaged refuse could exacerbate flooding in the state.
In response, Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi, stated that the Ministry is working to clear the waste. He has contacted the vendors responsible for the affected areas and warned that if no action is taken within 48 hours, their contracts may be terminated.
The situation reflects growing public frustration over inadequate waste management in Calabar and pressures the government to take immediate action.
