Rivers Assembly Confirms Fubara’s Impeachment Process Ongoing, Dismisses Suspension Claims

The Rivers State House of Assembly has clarified that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, is ongoing, dismissing reports suggesting the process has been suspended or abandoned as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Assembly said the impeachment exercise, which officially began on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is being conducted strictly in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The statement, signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, confirmed that separate notices detailing allegations of gross misconduct against both the governor and the deputy governor have been duly prepared and transmitted to them by the Speaker of the House.

According to the Assembly, it is currently awaiting formal responses from the affected officials, as stipulated by law, before advancing to the next phase of the impeachment process.

The lawmakers emphasized that the House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered to act on behalf of the people to check infractions and ensure adherence to democratic governance by elected officials.

“The House of Assembly is mandated by the Constitution to protect the will of the people and address any constitutional breaches by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or other public officers of Rivers State,” the statement said.

George expressed concern over what he described as deliberate attempts by certain individuals and media platforms to spread misinformation, particularly claims that the impeachment process had been halted.

He urged the public to disregard such reports, stressing that the process remains active and firmly on course, and warned that the Assembly would not be intimidated by threats, pressure, or blackmail.

“We remain resolute in carrying out our constitutional responsibilities and will not be distracted by cheap blackmail or actions that undermine our democracy,” the statement added.

The House also thanked the people of Rivers State for their prayers, support, and encouragement, while expressing appreciation to stakeholders and leaders across various levels for their engagement since the impeachment proceedings began.
