Role Model Reveals the Celebrity Inspiration Behind His Viral “Sally” Segment on Tour

Role Model, the stage name of singer Tucker Pillsbury, is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the viral moment that has captivated audiences online: the “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out” segment from his ongoing Kansas Anymore Tour. Speaking with James Austin Johnson of Saturday Night Live at Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians event, the singer shared the surprising origin story of the interactive concert highlight.

The Origins of the “Sally” Moment

Role Model first introduced the “Sally” segment during his tour performances of “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out”, a track from the deluxe version of his 2025 album Kansas Anymore. The segment quickly became a fan-favorite, with celebrities and fans alike stepping into the role of the elusive “Sally” during live shows.

When asked who decides which celebrity becomes “Sally,” Role Model explained:

“Me,” he said simply, before recounting how the idea first came to life.

He revealed that the inspiration came unexpectedly during a Dallas tour stop. A joke circulating online suggested that influencer and podcast host Jake Shane was the muse for the song.

“He happened to be in Dallas and I was like this would be funny to play into that, and he came up,” Role Model said. “Originally I was going to have him up for a different song, something else, and then we did that and people loved that, so we started bringing up fans.”

Celebrities Who Have Played “Sally”

Since the Dallas show, the viral moment has expanded to include an impressive lineup of guest “Sallys.” Celebrities who have joined Role Model on stage include:

  • Jake Shane
  • Kate Hudson
  • Bowen Yang
  • Natalie Portman

This interactive moment has sparked a social media phenomenon, with fans eagerly anticipating who will play “Sally” at each stop of the tour.

Trend of Celebrity Fan Interaction on Tour

The “Sally” segment follows a growing trend among contemporary music tours, where performers feature fans or celebrities in playful, viral moments. Examples include:

  • Sabrina Carpenter arresting fans and celebrities during her Short n’ Sweet tour
  • Charli XCX inviting fans to perform a viral TikTok dance during her song “Apple”

Such moments have become an essential part of modern concert experiences, blending live performance with social media virality.

A Breakout Year for Role Model

2025 has been a defining year for Role Model, as his Kansas Anymore Tour gained widespread attention both on stage and online. Speaking about the album last year, the singer reflected:

“[Music] was brand new [to me] when I first put out a song, and I think people got to watch me very slowly figure it out. I think Kansas Anymore was the turning point, where I just figured all my s— out. It was finally an album that I’m proud of and that I genuinely listen to all the time.”

The viral “Sally” segment underscores Role Model’s ability to connect with fans and celebrities alike, making his concerts both interactive and highly shareable.
